Honors in Independent Study: March 24 Deadline
Outstanding independent work may be cited for “Honors in Independent Study” at Honors Convocation. Such recognition is based solely on the excellence of the special project and is considered independently of a student’s or students’ academic average or other qualifying factors. The independent study project need not be in the student(s) major field and is available to all students in any class, not just to seniors.
Work submitted for consideration for Honors in Independent Study normally would have been done under the rubric of independent study as listed in the Academic Catalog or as independent research conducted over the summer. This means that course papers, comprehensive projects, etc., would not ordinarily be eligible for consideration; they receive other awards.
Submission Criteria
For a project to be considered for Honors in Independent Study, the faculty supervisor of the project should submit the following, using the online submission form no later than one week after the last exam day of Winter Term. The deadline for 2025 is 5 PM on Monday, March 24.
1. A copy of the Honors in Independent Studies project;
2. A letter of nomination to the Fellowship Committee:
- detailing the merits of the project and its distinction relative to other student work in the field;
- providing information about its genesis;
- confirming that the project is not substantially identical to the student’s integrative exercise (comps project);
- identifying others at Carleton who would be able to evaluate the project’s merit.
The project will then be given to a second reader for evaluation, and that reader will be asked for a brief report to be given to the Student Fellowship Committee. The Committee shall then determine whether Honors in Independent Study is appropriate.

Events with Dr. Pittman
- Pedagogical Care: What It Is (and Isn’t), and Why it Matters for Faculty (and Student) Success. Thu, April 3, 2025 • 8:30 – 9:45am • Weitz 236: Faculty often face expectations for student service and care work that, while valuable, can compete with research, teaching, and professional advancement, leading to unintended consequences for faculty and for student learning. This interactive session will examine research on additional service and care labor frequently placed on faculty and how these expectations shape their professional experiences. All faculty and staff are welcome; individuals with roles in hiring, mentoring, and promotion are particularly encouraged to attend.
- Chavella Pittman Consultation Time for Faculty & Staff. Thu, April 3, 2025 • 10:00am – 10:45am (45m) • Weitz 236: Chavella Pittman will be available in a small group setting to chat with underrepresented faculty and staff about their higher education experiences. (Dr. Pittman is donating her time for these consultations.)
- LTC Lunch: Documenting Teaching Effectiveness for Student Learning, Tenure, and Promotion. Thu, April 3, 2025 • 12:00 – 1:30pm • Weitz 236: Faculty’s own experiences and perspectives help them to bring innovative teaching methods to the classroom. However, these novel methods can influence classroom dynamics, as well as how students and colleagues evaluate their teaching. In this interactive session, participants will learn and practice strategies for documenting evidence of their teaching effectiveness in ways that accurately reflect their contributions. All faculty and staff are welcome; individuals in teaching roles and those who evaluate teaching are particularly encouraged to attend. Please feel free to leave early as needed.
