Associate Provost Update for Fall Term 2025
Professor George Shuffelton will temporarily step back into his former Associate Provost role for fall term 2025, while Associate Provost David Liben-Nowell is leading an OCS program. During fall term, George will be the academic division contact for non-tenure-track faculty hiring, curriculum management, academic integrity issues, language exemptions, and matters involving ECC. We thank George for his willingness to rejoin the office for a term next year!
Updates to IRB Application
We recently updated our IRB application, including making the following changes. Please note these updates as you apply for IRB approval this term and beyond.
- We have updated the question about studies that use incomplete disclosure or deception procedures to ensure that IRB applicants include information about how they plan to debrief participants about these procedures. Please review “A Note on Incomplete Disclosure and Deception” on the IRB website for more information.
- We have added a section in the application for any studies that will involve working with/in Indigenous communities. This change is consistent with similar changes that have been made to IRB processes at other colleges and universities, and anticipates an increase in such studies at Carleton in connection with the Mellon Foundation “Indigenous Engagement in Place” grant. Please review “A Note on Research With/in Indigenous Communities” for more information and be on the lookout for training opportunities about such research from the Indigenous Engagement in Place grant team. We would like to thank Professor Meredith McCoy and Marcy Averill for facilitating a training session with the IRB committee.
As always, please contact IRB Chair Anita Chikkatur if you have any questions about your studies and contact Victoria Perez with any OnBase questions.

Advising
Advising Days Start Today!
The work you do advising our students is invaluable, and we thank you. Especially now, your guidance is crucial to their success as they navigate their academic journey at Carleton.
Useful Advising Workday Reports
When meeting with your advisees, remember to use the readily available reports in your advising dashboard. These include the “Department Picks” report, highlighting a featured course in each department that has submitted one; the “Newly Added Courses” report, showcasing courses being taught for the first time; and the “Courses Without Prerequisites” report, an excellent resource for first-year students exploring curricular options.
Transition Time for Sophomores
This time is an important transition period for sophomores and a great opportunity for you to ask them how their decision-making process is going. For those sophomore advisees who have yet to commit to a major, it may be productive to have them prepare a Major Decision Worksheet for several options and have them run through their thinking with you on each one. Choosing a major can be stressful and anxiety-producing for many students, but it ought not be. Try to encourage your advisees by reaffirming that their choice of major does not necessarily foreclose the professional options they would like to keep open. Use the Carleton Career Pathways as a tool to reinforce this principle with your advisees.
