Immigration Response Guidance
A reminder that the Immigration Task Force has created a website with guidance about how to interact with ICE or other federal agencies should they be on campus, and how to protect the rights and privacy of Carleton students, staff, and faculty. Faculty should feel free to contact the Immigration Task Force or the Provosts’ Office with any questions.
Guess Lectures
Julia Strand invites faculty to participate in a new event, Guess Lectures: During two common times in spring term (April 22 and May 15), participating faculty will give lightning talks (10 minutes max) using someone else’s slides from an unrelated discipline, sight unseen.
This has the potential to be really fun. Imagine this: A biology professor stands at the podium. A wheel-of-fortune style spinner rolls past “Philosophy, ”CAMS,” and “Religion” and lands on “Art History.” Deep breath. What does she remember from that painting class sophomore year? Definitely use the word “composition.” The guy in that painting looks kind of like Jude Law. Hey, that pastoral scene has wheat in it, plenty to say about Triticum aestivum. 10 minutes is up. Riotous applause ensues.
This is an easy lift: no preparation possible, only time required is 10 minutes during one common time.
If you’d like to be a Guess Lecturer, please fill out this form! If you’re not up for lecturing but would be willing to donate your slides for someone else to use (and potentially spark interest for your course!), please do so here!

Advising
Reminder: Selection of Student Departmental Advisers
Each year, one or two seniors serve departments (or programs) as SDAs. These Student Departmental Advisers help inform students about courses, prerequisites, college and departmental requirements, and so supplement information and advice available through advisers and published materials. It is now time to identify your SDAs for 2025-26.
A complete description of the responsibilities of SDAs can be found here. The specific roles that SDAs play vary significantly from one department to another. But, in general, one might think of a good SDA as a student who:
- knows the department and its curriculum well,
- is responsible,
- communicates clearly with both students and faculty,
- would represent the department well as an “ambassador” to other students, job candidates and other visitors,
- is enthusiastic and eager to be a “booster” for the department.
The only College-wide requirements are that all SDA’s must:
- have a 3.0 GPA and
- be in residence and enrolled throughout their senior year (it is possible to make exceptions to this policy in the case of departments or programs with very few senior majors/concentrators).
SDAs must be available for a brief orientation during New Student Week in the fall. The exact date and time will be announced to all newly selected SDAs this May. Note that SDAs serve the College as volunteers.
Please select your SDA(s) for the 2025–26 year and send their names and email addresses to Becky Krogh by Thursday, May 1. If you have any questions about the selection of SDAs, please contact Yansi Pérez.
