New Collaborative Teaching Guidelines
Many of you will have already heard of the new collaborative teaching guidelines, but we wanted to make you aware of where you can find them on the Provost’s Office website and the process for notifying the Provost’s Office, as well as the timeline for making any requests that would involve adding FTE to a visiting appointment. While we know that they will not solve all constraints on collaborative teaching, we believe these revised guidelines will serve faculty well. We look forward to learning of the many ways that Carleton faculty collaborate to offer our students an innovative curriculum.
Associate Provost Transition Timing
As previously announced in the February 5, 2026, issue of Carleton Today, Melissa Eblen-Zayas, professor of physics, will soon be transitioning into the Associate Provost role currently occupied by Yansi Perez, while Matt Whited, professor of chemistry, will take over the Associate Provost role currently occupied by Eric Egge. Yansi will conclude her time in the Office of the Provost on June 30 and Melissa will assume her Associate Provost duties on July 1. To enable him to attend to a variety of prior commitments in July, Matt will assume his Associate Provost duties on July 15. To help bridge the gap, especially in the context of end-of-fiscal-year activities, Eric will serve as an Associate Provost half-time in July, concluding his time in the Office of the Provost on July 31.

Progress Reports
Faculty members should submit progress reports to the Dean of Students Office for students who are not meeting class expectations. This could include any of the following: missed classes, missed assignments, lack of communication, disengagement in class, or wellness concerns.
The purpose of having the Dean of Students Office receive progress reports is three-fold: to confirm for students that they are in academic difficulty, to inform those in a position to assist and support students (Class Dean) of the nature of the concern, and to reveal patterns of behavior about students as they may not be meeting expectations in multiple classes.
To initiate this process, please use the progress report form. Your academic progress reports have proven helpful in assisting students with their academic success.

Advising
Selection of Student Departmental Advisers
Each year, one or two seniors serve departments (or programs) as SDAs. These Student Departmental Advisers help inform students about courses, prerequisites, college and departmental requirements, and so supplement information and advice available through advisers and published materials. It is now time to identify your SDAs for 2026-27.
SDA Roles and Requirements
A complete description of the responsibilities of SDAs can be found here. The specific roles that SDAs play vary significantly from one department to another. But, in general, one might think of a good SDA as a student who:
- knows the department and its curriculum well,
- is responsible,
- communicates clearly with both students and faculty,
- would represent the department well as an “ambassador” to other students, job candidates and other visitors,
- is enthusiastic and eager to be a “booster” for the department.
The only College-wide requirements are that all SDAs must:
- have a 3.0 GPA and
- be in residence and enrolled throughout their senior year (it is possible to make exceptions to this policy in the case of departments or programs with very few senior majors/concentrators).
SDAs must be available for a brief orientation during New Student Week in the fall. The exact date and time will be announced to all newly selected SDAs this May. Note that SDAs serve the College as volunteers.
Please select your SDA(s) for the 2026–27 year and send their names and email addresses to Becky Krogh by Friday, May 1. If you have any questions about the selection of SDAs, please contact Yansi Pérez.
Referring Students for Writing Support
Spring brings with it major writing projects for many students: Sophomore Portfolios, Comps final drafts, job applications, etc. The Academic Support Center’s Term-Long Writing Program pairs students with a peer writing consultant for an entire term. Additionally, the Writing Center offers many types of support, so encourage your advisees to take advantage of these programs. One resource in particular for students whose first language is not English (both international and domestic) is Kristen Vogel, coordinator of Multilingual Writing Support. Advisers whose multilingual students have expressed concerns about a recent WR course or upcoming writing projects are encouraged to refer them to Kristen Vogel.
