Carleton College’s 12th president will be Alison R. Byerly, an experienced and energetic leader, nationally recognized scholar, and passionate advocate for interdisciplinary education and the liberal arts. She begins her work at Carleton on August 1, 2021, following eight years as president of Lafayette College.
President Byerly shares her thoughts on leadership and working together with the entire Carleton community to move the College into the future as “a tremendous model for liberal arts education.”
“President Byerly is an innovative leader with stellar academic credentials and a deep admiration for the liberal arts,” said Wally Weitz ’70, chair of the Carleton College Board of Trustees and co-chair of the Presidential Search Committee. “She is committed to academic excellence and leads with resilience, optimism, and a dose of good humor. She brings to Carleton enormous energy, long-term vision, and an ability to engage and inspire others around a shared vision.”
President Byerly is a highly experienced and gifted academic leader. She also is a Carleton parent — her daughter Laramie Jensen graduated with the Class of 2015. Prior to becoming president at Lafayette, she was a faculty member, provost and executive vice president at Middlebury College for 24 years.
“Alison brings a wonderful combination of candor and energy as Carleton’s 12th president. Those twin strengths, combined with her dedication to liberal arts excellence and her commitment to seeing Carleton as a place where all can thrive, generate new enthusiasm for Carleton’s future.”
