Tragic news for our community

28 February 2014

We have devastating, heart-wrenching news to share with the Carleton community.

This afternoon, five Carleton students were involved in an automobile accident just outside of Northfield. Three of the students—James Adams ’15 (St. Paul, Minn./chemistry major), Michael Goodgame ’15 (Westport, Conn./political science major), and Paxton Harvieux ’15 (Stillwater, Minn./computer science)—died as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. Two other students—Conor Eckert ’17 (Seattle/undeclared) and Will Sparks ’15 (Evanston, Ill./economics)—are hospitalized in the Twin Cities and are in stable condition.

We offer our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of James, Michael and Paxton, and we hope and pray for the full recovery of Will and Conor. The collective Carleton soul aches for the loss of these three young men. Right now, we need to focus all our love and compassion on supporting the families and friends of all these young men, along with everyone in our community who cares for them.

During this incredibly difficult and sad time, we will need to lean on one another and support one another. To that end, a vigil will be held Saturday, March 1, at Skinner Memorial Chapel at 11 a.m. Members of the College’s counseling staff and chaplains are available to any members of the community that need professional support during this time of immense sorrow and grief.
