Celebrating Our Diverse Community

5 February 2025

The start of Black History Month (BHM) reminds us of the importance of learning about, reckoning with, and celebrating Black history. At Carleton, BHM events include a convocation talk with printmaker Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., whose works of political and social commentary highlight Black identity and experience, and an OIL Talk, “Black Resiliency Moving Forward No Matter the Obstacle,” featuring Black faculty and staff, from the Office of Intercultural Life. Black History Moments at Carleton, a gallery exhibit, will open in Upper Sayles. If you follow OIL on Instagram, students are sharing “Did you Know” BHM facts and offering giveaways for engagement.

This month also features vibrant celebrations of Lunar New Year. Last Saturday’s festival in Weitz showcased an amazing array of talented performers, including traditional dancers performing to classical music, bands with pop singers in several languages, and a K-Pop dance crew. Kracum was packed with an enthusiastic crowd that also enjoyed some great food afterward. Off campus, senior lecturer in music Gao Hong will premiere a pipa concerto, commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra, at a concert on February 8, and the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble will perform for a pre-concert event at Minneapolis Orchestra Hall.

Belonging to a diverse community in which we can learn from and about each other’s varied cultures is an important part of a Carleton education. Our commitment to that educational process extends beyond students to faculty and staff and the broader Carleton community. At this weekend’s Board of Trustees meeting, trustees will participate in the Intercultural Development Inventory, a program designed to foster intercultural understanding. I am proud to be part of a community that recognizes that we are all, and always, learners.
