Dear Members of the Carleton Community,
In October 2016, Carleton College will observe its Sesquicentennial: 150 years of proud history, academic achievement, growth, change, and community, dating back to our founding on October 12, 1866.
It is my great pleasure to invite the entire Carleton community to celebrate this milestone anniversary with us through a series of special events— beginning at Reunion 2016 this June and culminating at Reunion 2017. The main event will be a three-day community-wide “birthday bash” on Family Weekend and fall Board of Trustee meetings, October 14-16. Garrison Keillor will be the featured Sesquicentennial Convocation speaker.
How much the world has changed in the 150 years since our founding as Northfield College is staggering to comprehend. And yet I believe that if we could transport the College’s founders to the present day, they would recognize that their vision for this institution still burns bright. So it is not only our founding that we commemorate in this historic year, but also the future that we continue to build on the strong foundation laid back in 1866.
To keep up with Sesquicentennial plans as they evolve, please visit and bookmark the Carleton 150 website, where you will find a historic timeline, events calendar, and a wealth of stories of Carleton past and present. We encourage all Carls—alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and friends alike— to submit their own stories and photos for the Sesquicentennial story collection.

I want to extend my special thanks to members of the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee for putting together such a thoughtful and fun program to recognize Carleton’s 150th anniversary. I look forward to seeing you at these special celebrations of Carleton past, present, and future.
