Appointment of Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations

29 January 2024

To the Carleton Community,

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Daren Batke as Carleton’s vice president for development and alumni relations. Currently the chief advancement officer at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, Daren brings to Carleton extensive experience in fundraising, development, and advancement, with 20 years spent working in higher education.

Daren’s energy, experience, and engagement in relationship-building emerged clearly as strengths through the search process. Additionally, his collaborative approach to fundraising impressed the search committee. A liberal arts graduate himself, Daren is eager to make the case for why the extraordinary education we offer at Carleton is worth supporting. His significant experience leading major and annual giving programs, as well as campaign development and strategy comes at a pivotal moment, as we begin to implement our strategic direction, Carleton 2033: The Liberal Arts in Action, and prepare to identify funding priorities and build the infrastructure for Carleton’s next capital campaign.  He will begin his work at Carleton on April 1.

A full press release with additional information can be found here.

I am very grateful to everyone who participated in the search process, including faculty and trustees who engaged with finalists. I particularly appreciate the input and participation of representatives from the division of External Relations, which on Daren’s arrival will become the division of Development and Alumni Relations. My deepest thanks to the search committee, which was ably chaired by Elise Eslinger ‘92, and which included: Jaime Anthony ’06, senior associate dean and director of admissions systems; Vinaya Chepuri ’82, P ’17, trustee; Helen Clarke, associate vice president for communications; Micah Evans ’02, alumni association president; Leslie Kautz ’80, P ’15, trustee; Jeff Ondich P ’12, P ’15, John E. Sawyer professor of liberal learning and professor of mathematics and computer science; Yansi Pérez, associate provost, director of advising, and professor of Spanish; and Pam Kiecker Royall ’80, trustee.

I hope that you will offer a warm welcome to Daren, and his husband Jeremy, as they join the Carleton community.

President Alison Byerly
