Course Preparation for Admission to Nursing School

Please note that one term at Carleton is recognized by medical schools as equivalent to a semester course.

Depending on the school, prerequisites have to be completed by the time you apply or by the time the program starts.  

Most schools require all of the following prerequisites for a Direct Entry MSN program:

  • BIO 332 – Human Physiology with Lab
  • Human Anatomy with Lab*
  • Psych 251- Lifespan Development
  • BIO 234 – Microbiology with Lab
  • STAT 120 – Statistics 
  • Nutrition*

The courses listed above have their own pre-requisites at Carleton, so the following courses are also required:

  • PSYCH 110 – Intro Psychology
  • BIO 125- Genes, Evolution and Development and lab
  • BIO 126- Energy Flow in Biological Systems and lab

In addition, here are other common prerequisites (you should check with each school you plan to apply to):

  • CHEM 123 Principles of Chemistry I
  • SOAN 111 – Intro Anthropology or Sociology
  • An English class (non English Writing Rich also work. Confirm with school) English Composition
  • ENGL 220 (only three credits) – Oral Communication**

*Not offered at Carleton. These classes can be taken at an accredited community college or a different university. Depending on the school these classes can be taken online. 

**May be required to take this class with more credits at a different institution

Note: The courses listed above satisfy most of the admissions requirements at U.S. Nursing Schools.  However, each school may not require all of these and schools may require additional courses. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the applicant to know the exact requirements and deadlines for each school to which they apply.
