The Pathways to Research Program provides undergraduate students with knowledge, skills, and experience in translational science and health equity research through a structured core curriculum including a mentored research project, weekly training seminars, small group discussions, and a final poster to present research findings at the annual University of Minnesota CTSI Translational Science Symposium & Poster Session held in September 2025.

11 December 2024The Department of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center is excited to offer an 8-week opportunity this summer called the Comprehensive Undergraduate Research Experience in Oncology (CURE). The program welcomes undergraduate rising sophomores and juniors that are interested in exploring careers in biomedical research to participate in a summer experience that provides a background in research in clinical medicine. Summer participants will have a structured didactic series featuring training in the key aspects of clinical research conduct, as well as exposure to different careers in biomedical research. Each student will be paired with a faculty mentor to participate in an active research project.

The goal of the UM-SMART program is to help students decide if a career as a physician-scientist is right for them, and to enhance competitiveness when applying to MD/PhD programs. The UM-SMART has helped 119 undergraduate participants learn about MD/PhD training since 2008. After graduation, 77% of past participants entered MD/PhD, PhD, or MD programs. This 10-week program is aimed at students who have some amount of basic and mechanistic research experience related to medicine and are interested in gaining more experience to advance their career goals. UM-SMART is not intended for students seeking clinical research experience on human subjects. Additionally, we do not offer opportunities in public health, the social sciences, or humanities.

Columbia University Summer Public Health Scholars Program for Undergraduates
4 November 2024The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is designed for undergraduate students and its goal is to increase interest in and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers. SPHSP is a partnership of the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, and the Mailman School of Public Health. Accepted students will be provided a stipend for their program participation. In addition, air/ground travel and housing costs are covered.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program (application deadline 1/10/25) Outside link
31 October 2024The Fred Hutch Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) is an intensive, 9-week internship designed to provide research experience and mentorship for rising-senior undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. Under the guidance of a faculty mentor, students will:
- Complete an independent research project;
- Attend weekly research seminars;
- Participate in professional development workshops designed to facilitate the preparation of competitive applications for graduate/medical school; and
- Present their findings at a competitive poster session.
The program will run from Monday, June 16 – Friday, August 15, 2025. An online application for the 2025 SURP is now available on the SURP website.
The application deadline is midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 10, 2025. Letters of recommendation for up to two references are due by midnight Pacific Standard Time (PST) on Friday, January 17, 2025.

The Mayo Clinic Otolaryngology Undergraduate Research Program is a paid internship for undergraduate students who are interested in careers in medicine or science and are members of groups that are underrepresented in medicine. It is 10 weeks long and runs from June through August. The Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery offers students the opportunity to see many different career paths in medicine and tailor the experience to their specific interests. Applications are open from 11/4/24-1/10/25.
