Endowed Professor Greg Marfleet: Security (re)Defined: Comparing National Security Priorities in the Post-Cold War Era

Thu, May 4, 2023 • 4:00pm - 5:30pm (1h 30m) • Hasenstab 002

Following a series of humanitarian crises in the 90's, an effort was made in humanitarian circles to reconceptualize security to include human and global concerns alongside traditional topics of national defense. How successful were efforts to establish new international norms such as R2P? Did these ideas, or emerging global threats like climate change, refugees, terrorism, or pandemics, alter the way states define their security priorities? Greg explores these questions for a sample of countries using data generated from human and AI language coding systems.
