Your paper and poster will be based on work completed in an advanced seminar, under the supervision of the seminar instructor. See the complete Comps Guidelines, seminar list, and past paper topics.

What kind of extracurricular events and social gatherings does the department have?

The Department frequently hosts speakers on various topics. We have an annual department picnic in the fall term, Quiz Bowl and bowling night in the winter, Ice Cream social in the spring, and Comps poster presentation receptions each term. See photo galleries from past events.

Can I S/Cr/NC classes that count for the major?

No. Courses that are counted to fulfill major requirements must be taken for a grade. The only exception to this is the Math prerequisite for POSC 230: Methods of Political Research.

How will I be assigned an adviser in the major?

Because we are such a large major, we cannot administer student selection of advisers in the framework of an equitable distribution of responsibility. Therefore, the Department assigns all majors to advisers.

Nothing prohibits students from discussing courses and career planning with any faculty member, as an unofficial adviser. But students are obligated by the Office of the Registrar to communicate with their official adviser prior to registering for courses and for the purposes of drop/add.
