The first joint Macalester-Carleton College Political Science Student Conference will be held April 4, 2007, in the Weyerhauser boardroom at Macalester College. As the attached announcement and application describe, this day-long conference will consist of thematically organized panels of paper presentations, each of which will include a student chair, 3-4 student presenters, and a faculty discussant. Both student and faculty participants will be drawn from the two colleges. Thanks to Rich Keiser and Al Montero for agreeing to serve as panel discussants, and Chair Larry Cooper for his support earlier in the planning process.
Approximately 16 students will be selected to present research papers as part of a day-long conference consisting of thematically organized panels. Each panel will consist of a student chair, 3-4 student presenters, and a distinguished faculty discussant.
Who Can Apply?
Although the conference is particularly appropriate for seniors working on Comps, Capstone, and Thesis projects in Political Science or International Relations, any Carleton or Macalester student is welcome to apply, regardless of major or class year. Prospective applicants are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor on their home campus.
How to Apply
Applicants should electronically submit the one-page form (see Call for Papers and application form) to Professor Paul Dosh (dosh@macalester.edu) by 5:00 pm, Friday, DECEMBER 15. Proposals may focus on topics from any of the discipline’s subfields, including U.S. Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Political Theory. Applicants will be notified via email, by January 26, whether or not their proposal has been accepted. Paper Requirements
Presenters must submit their finished conference paper by March 20. Timely submission is essential so that faculty discussants and fellow panelists have time to read the papers prior to the conference. In addition, some Macalester classes will be reading conference papers and attending panels as part of their regular assigned coursework. Papers should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages. There is no conference registration fee, and all panels are free and open to the public. Full details on logistics and meals will be available in January.
