Women of Color who Code

30 January 2023

WoCCode is a peer-mentoring network and counter-space for members of marginalized groups in STEM to connect over code. We host monthly webinars that alternate between hack activities and guest speakers from women of color coders in academia and industry.

For example, in February we are hosting an Introduction to Building Games in Python. You can view a full listing of events.

About WoCCode

Women of Color (WoC) – which includes Black, indigenous, and Latinx minorities – are the most underrepresented demographic from high-paying industries, including software engineering. Yet
WoC are flush with the talent, creativity, and social insight to solve complex problems and lead in
the software industry. This program seeks to unite WoC and other members of minoritized groups,
to battle feelings of isolation and marginalization that are prevalent in educational institutions and
industry settings. Using a dedicated Slack space, we will create a peer mentoring network for
people to engage, receive feedback, and troubleshoot issues around.

By naming Women of Color in the title of the program, we aim to explicitly invite people who hold this intersectional identity. WoCCode is open to people with overlapping identities, such as trans and non-binary Black, Indigenous, Asian and other people of color. People from minoritized groups who hold masculine identities are welcome to join WoCCode if the environment seems appropriate for them. All applicants are asked to provide a short essay describing why WoCCode is a good fit. Anyone may apply to [WoC] Code.
