Astro students: Considering grad school? Our graduate Traci Johnson, now at Michigan State, has informed us of an opportunity for you to visit her grad school, U Michigan. “Michigan Astronomy is hosting a Fall Preview Weekend for prospective students to visit our department and learn about our the graduate program and life in lovely Ann Arbor. Plus, it’s fully funded! I thought I would spread the word to see if there were any interested juniors or seniors at Carleton, especially students from underrepresented groups in physics and astronomy, who would like a taste of what grad school is like before they start filling out applications or even take the Physics GRE (which we don’t even ask for anymore!).
“I should also mention that this is a joint-event with the Michigan Earth and Environmental Sciences department as well. So please feel free to forward to other departments in related fields.
“The application deadline is — Oct 12. Program is Nov 16-18, 2017. The application details, form, and contact info for questions can be found here: https://goo.gl/forms/394cuH1sL

We’ve been hosting this event for the last few years now and it has been a great resource for students interested in applying to grad school in physics/astronomy, even if it is not at Michigan. We offer a lot of advice for how students can find research opportunities and draft competitive applications for graduate schools. Several students who have attended this fall preview are currently enrolled in our doctorate program. We tend to get a lot of students from R1 research universities — we would love to see more liberal arts students come our way!
