Summer 2015 work position

27 April 2015

There is a summer work position available for a student interested in working on the College’s weather site.  (Carleton has been recording weather data since 1881, making this possibly the longest-running research project at the College!)  The work will be divided between helping to set up new weather data gathering instruments in the Arb, and programming in Linux and Python.

The Arb work will involve manual labor, so a cheerful willingness to be outdoors in the summertime is desired.    An interest in electronics will be helpful but no experience is necessary.

Programming will be done on a single-board microcontroller running Debian.  Familiarity with updating Linux, installing packages, and some proficiency in writing Python is desired.  Emphasis will be placed on carefully and completely documenting your code.

The successful candidate should be comfortable and productive working alone for hours at a time.  In all aspects of the work, attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive instruments will be required.

To apply for this position, please write a few sentences for each of the following:

  • What makes you interested in this position?
  • Please describe your experience or interest in electronics.
  • Please describe your familiarity with Linux and Python.
  • Would you have any restrictions to working outside in the summer?
  • How well do you do meeting deadlines and self pacing your work?

Please send one or two references, along with the above, to Tom Baraniak (tbarania@carleton.edu).
