Wireless Energy Transfer

Sam Keller

Having to use power cords to charge our electronic devices is a hassle; anyone who forgets to charge their cell phone or laptop before heading out for the day knows why. Wireless energy transfer is the process by which electrical energy can be transferred without cords. There is commercially available technology that can transfer energy over a centimeter or two, but methods for transmitting energy over distances of a few meters are still being explored. I will discuss the development of this technology, its historical uses, what’s currently being worked on, and its potentially ubiquitous applications.
