Optics and Photonics Workshop

The College of Optical Sciences will host the 3rd Optics and Photonics Winter School and Workshop January 4-7, 2018, on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ.  On behalf of the organizing committee I would like to invite you to participate. We had your colleague Arjendu Pattanayak at our 2016 event, and Carleton undergrads took part in both 2016 and 2017. This time around we very much hope you and a few more of your bright undergrads can join us.  Funding is available to cover travel and local expenses. Information about the 2018 event is available at http://wp.optics.arizona.edu/winter-school-workshop/ , including tentative programs and schedules under the tabs “Winter School” and “Workshop”.  You will also find a link to “Immersion Day”, a new event that will offer participants an opportunity for hands-on experience in research and teaching labs at our College.  Finally, there are links to the 2016 and 2017 events under the tab “Past Workshops”, including detailed programs and photos of the participants.

The Optics and Photonics Winter School runs Jan. 4-5, and will introduce undergrads to foundational areas of optical science and their role in optics and photonics research, in hopes of encouraging them to pursue a career in the field.  The Optics and Photonics Workshop runs Jan. 6-7, and targets faculty from primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) as well as students from the Winter School.  The workshop will allow PUI faculty to share results, approaches, and methodologies in optics & photonics research and education that are unique to the undergraduate setting.  You are invited to present a talk which you can focus either on your research and its contribution to undergraduate education, or more broadly on undergraduate education in STEM fields at your institution.  We also ask that you recommend 2-3 talented and interested students (preferably juniors or seniors) from your institution for participation in the Winter School.  If you are able to support any of your own travel and/or that of one or more students through grants or departmental resources, please let us know as this will allow us to bring in additional student participants.
