Beginning in Fall term 2024, we’ll have a new tenure-track faculty member in the PHAS department. We’re happy to announce that Dr. Andreia ‘Dreia’ Carrillo has accepted an offer from Carleton and will join us in Minnesota soon. She’s already engaging with faculty and staff to prepare for her arrival, and is excited to meet and begin working with students. Here’s a few bits of info from her webpage:
Hi! I’m Dreia!

I am a proud Filipina Galactic archaeologist and currently a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University.
I study how our own Galaxy formed using the chemical abundances and motions of thousands of stars. With these chemodynamical tools, using both observational and simulation data, I tag stars into different populations to understand the detailed picture of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way. I’m specifically interested in the stellar halo wherein a lot of accreted material reside as a consequence of the Milky Way’s assembly.
I love to teach and do outreach, from kindergartners to college students. I also love mentoring students in research and connecting them with other astronomers. My dream is to extend my science and the astronomy community to my home country by providing research and post-grad opportunities for astronomy in the Philippines. If not doing research, you’ll find me singing, playing the guitar, running, or taking a random class at the gym!
Next year, students will see Dreia in the classroom teaching things like Introduction to Astronomy, labs for an intro Physics course, and Astrophysics. Welcome Dreia!
