Quantum Biology
Lisa Plucinski
In the field of quantum biology, quantum mechanical models are required for a complete description of biological function. In these cases, quantum effects must survive in macroscopic and complex environments. The leading models of interest are coherent energy transfer in photosynthesis and a radical pair mechanism of magnetoreception in birds. Other topics, such as a quantum mechanical model of olfaction and consciousness, remain purely hypothetical. I will survey these topics, discuss the potential functional role of quantum effects, and highlight applications.
