A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS: Particle Detectors at the Large Hadron Collider

A Toroidal LHC ApparatuS (ATLAS) is one of the detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that was responsible for the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, and is still working to discover new physics. To detect new particles, ATLAS is made up of a series of different types of particle detectors, all working together to identify the momentum and energy of the particles resulting from the collision of two high energy proton beams. The different components of the detector are discussed, starting with the inner detector at the center of the device, working outward through the calorimeters and ending with the muon spectrometer. Both the design of the detector and the physics used to detect particles are discussed.
