Everything is Possible: A Hyperbolic Discussion of the Power of Data and Information Visualization
Data visualization is having a moment. We’ll explore why this might be, using historical and modern examples from science, journalism, humanities, and art. The talk will be both practical and speculative. It will include an overview of best practices, traditional and emerging tools, and current opportunities. We’ll also predict probable and propose aspirational future directions for data and information visualization.
Jen Lowe has a Master’s degree in Information Science, focusing on government data and secrecy, information seeking behavior, and online searching. She completed graduate work in pure mathematics and a B.S. in applied mathematics, and provides data analysis and scientific programming for the Research Foundation at California State University. Jen is passionate about open data and open source tools, especially R, Python, and Processing. A sucker for a good argument, she’ll nearly always side with complexity.
