The title of Andrew’s talk is Looking into Atoms
Abstract: We now have microscopes powerful enough to resolve individual atoms. But what lies further in? What are the fundamental building blocks of the universe? And whatever they are, how do they interact with each other? High-energy particle physics wrestles with these questions. We’ve discovered a remarkable amount, and we’re about to find out more from the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland. I want to talk about the interplay of theory and experiment at colliders as well as the exciting new collaboration between particle physics and cosmology. In the course of hitting on a lot of big ideas, I’ll talk about my own research that lies at the interface of theory and experiment. Students who have completed Atomic and Nuclear should be well equipped for a little dabbling in special relativity and quantum mechanics, but I hope to provide a discussion of fun facts and ideas accessible even to non-majors.
