Entropy, Fractals, and Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics

Abstract:
In this talk we will speak generally of the concept of entropy and its applications. Specific interest will be paid to the information theory interpretation and those applications pertaining fractals. As it turns out, the concept of fractal dimension is intimately connected to the traditional formulation of entropy, but in some senses is more general. This observation motivates a new definition of entropy. There is some reason to believe that this new formulation has applications to non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
