• DiversiTea (in place of Physics Table

DiversiTEA presents: A conversation on bullying and high-functioning autism (Asperger’s) in the workplace. Join us during common time (12:25-1:25pm) on 6th Tuesday (2/9) for a video showing and discussion over Zoom. We hope to connect the issues raised in the video to making our physics work/learning spaces more welcoming. All are welcome!
  • Winter Term DCC Meeting

Attn: SDAs and DCC class representatives!

Remember to hop on to Zoom Thursday during common time (12:25 pm) for this term’s DCC meeting.  Stop by Trenne’s office just before, to pick up your lunch.  (RSVP to Trenne ASAP if you haven’t already!)  A link to the meeting was in the email invite from Trenne!

  • Engineering REUs

Washington University Summer Engineering Fellowship Program

    Application deadline: February 15, 2021

The WUSEF program is designed to encourage exceptional students from backgrounds underrepresented in the STEM fields—including underrepresented minority students, students from economically disadvantaged and underserved backgrounds, and students with disabilities—to participate in an engineering research project of their choice. Students must be a citizen or non-citizen national of the United States or an individual who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States.

Computer Science & Engineering Research Experience for Undergraduates

    Application deadline: February 16, 2021

Participating in an undergraduate research project is a great way to learn a lot about a specific area and to try your hand at a cutting-edge research topic. If you are thinking about graduate school, this is also an excellent opportunity to find out what research is about and to get experience before applying. Research projects also demonstrate to potential employers that you are capable of moving beyond coursework to solve an open-ended problem. Plus, it’s fun! We welcome both domestic students and international students studying in US institutions. If you have any questions about our program, please feel free to email: reu@cse.wustl.edu.

Thermal Management Research Experience for Undergraduates

    Application deadline: February 15, 2021

Be immersed in projects tied to controlling temperature and the transfer of thermal energy (thermal management), which is critical to addressing clean and renewable energy production; inexpensive, efficient and reliable transportation; and ever-increasing data storage and processing demands. You’ll have multiple one-on-one advising sessions with faculty to define and develop a plan for achieving personal goals. At least seven slots are reserved for students from WashU’s dual degree partner schools for summer 2021. Students must be a citizen or noncitizen national of the United States or an individual who has been lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States.

  • Research Internships

This is your final reminder to apply for the APS/IBM Summer Internships!

Looking for a paid summer internship to enhance your STEM education? Interested in working at a world-class research facility? APS and IBM co-sponsor two undergraduate research internship programs for women and underrepresented minorities.

The goals of these programs are to encourage women and underrepresented minority undergraduate students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering. They are also enticing to students because:

    • Both internship programs feature salaried positions at IBM Research locations that are typically 10 weeks long.
    • These internships provide an opportunity for interns to work closely with an IBM mentor.
    • You will have the opportunity to travel to either San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY for these positions.

The undergraduate women internships are located at any of the locations, and the research internships for underrepresented minorities are located in San Jose, CA. While the Austin lab focuses on research for software and systems, the other programs have a full range of research opportunities.

The Importance of Investing in Physics

    February 2, 2021

Research with immediate applications is easy to justify, but there are economic and philosophical reasons to invest in physics even when the return is not obvious.
