Carleton Summer Science Fellowship Application
The goal of the Summer Science Fellowship is to increase participation of people from historically underrepresented groups (including gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, and disabilities) in the sciences and math. Carleton Summer Science Fellows will have the opportunity to work in a research lab either at Carleton or at another institution for two summers. You would earn a summer stipend of $4600. Summer Science Fellows will be expected to enroll in the 1-credit ‘Science Fellows Research Colloquium’ in the Spring before and the Fall following their research experience.

Community Conversation: Hiring
Hi everyone,
In Winter Term we will be hiring a new tenure-track faculty member in experimental physics. Timing will be tight this year since the first candidate is scheduled to arrive on the first day of classes. Since we cannot talk with you in January before candidates begin to arrive, we are inviting you to an end of term conversation about the hiring process on Wednesday, November 14 during 6a in Olin 141. And yes – there will be treats!
We need your help in assessing the candidates and in identifying the strengths you feel they would bring to our Department. We will also ask if you feel there are any “red flags” that would prevent them from being a good teacher here at Carleton. With help from the Departmental Curriculum Committee (DCC), the candidate evaluation forms have been updated and will be available for you at each candidate talk. We’ve heard from the DCC and other discussions that you have some concerns about how diverse and inclusive our hiring practice is and what factors the Department feels are important in the hiring of new faculty. There are many factors to consider when choosing a new faculty member and we’d like to discuss these with you. While we may not be able to discuss all of the particulars of a given hiring decision due to confidentiality reasons, your input in the hiring process is extremely important to us.
So join us on Wednesday for a discussion of the upcoming hiring process and let’s work together to find the best new faculty addition to our departmental community.
Cindy Blaha, on behalf of the Department
