Physics Outreach
The Physics and Astronomy department is looking for students interested in doing physics outreach at local schools. If we have enough interested students, we will obtain Cool SOCKs (SPS Outreach Catalyst Kits). The theme for the 2006 SOCK is temperature, in conjunction with Absolute Zero and the Conquest of Cold, a public television special planned for spring 2007, about low temperature physics. The materials that are included in the SOCK were chosen based on their potential to be used in various outreach settings and after some testing in the classroom and in less formal venues by the 2006 SPS interns. There are items to be used as demonstrations and hands-on activities, a User’s Guide for ideas on how to begin, and a dropping experiment with data collection tables to complete and return to SPS.
If you are interested in this type of outreach at area schools, please contact Nelson Christenson as soon as possible.
