Peter Schultz ’66 Talk about NASA’s Deep Impact Mission
February 22 (Thursday), 4:30-5:30 pm, Olin 141
The Deep Impact (DI) mission collided with a comet on July 4, 2005. Cameras and spectrometers captured the largest controlled oblique experiment in history. The nature of the target (Comet 9/P Tempel 1), however, was completely unknown. Consequently, a series of small-scale hypervelocity impact experiments were performed at NASA Ames in order to
aid in interpretation. These experiments reveal that the upper surface of the comet must have a low density and that observed ices hidden below were exposed by the impact. The talk will describe the DI experiment, laboratory experiments, and what we have learned. More information on the Deep Impact mission can be found at http://deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov/index.cfm. Information about Peter Schultz can be found at http://deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/bio-pschultz.cfm. -
