Ivan Deutsch from the University of New Mexico
Ivan Deutsch will give a talk over pizza on October18 in Olin 04. The title of Ivan’s talk is Quantum Information Processing with Ultracold Atomic Qubits
Abstract: The end of the twentieth century saw the coming together of two of its greatest intellectual achievements — digital information processing and quantum mechanics. What lies ahead of Moore’s road map of ever shrinking microprocessor components is not just a tinier version of devises, but a broad new principle based on quantum superpositions and nonlocal entanglement. A particularly promising scheme employs some of the coolest matter around — the optical lattice — neutral atoms trapped in a virtual crystal of light. -
Sigma Xi Poster Session
All Science and Math Sigma Xi Poster Session is scheduled for Friday, October 21 from 3:30-4:30 in Hulings Atrium. Students who did summer research at Carleton or elsewhere will be presenting their results in poster format. Please come support them! You are welcome to come and go over the hour. Everyone is strongly encouraged to attend and talk with some of the presenters about their projects. You’ll learn a lot of new and interesting science and math.
If you did research somewhere last summer (at Carleton or elsewhere), please consider presenting a poster. In many cases, students use a poster that that is already prepared. If you did summer research at Carleton last summer, please talk to your summer research advisor if you need advice about (or funds for) making your poster. If you do present, please show up 10-15 minutes early and find a place to mount your poster. Your poster can be up to 42″ tall and 4-5′ wide. Supplies for attaching your poster to easels will be provided in Hulings.
Co-sponsored by Sigma Xi and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute grant to Carleton. -

American Association of Physics Teachers Scholarship
The American Association of Physics Teachers is offering two $2,000 scholarships for future high-school physics teachers. This scholarship, supported by an endowment funded by Barbara Lotze, is available only to U.S. citizens attending a U.S. school. Undergraduate students in, or planning to enter, physics teacher preparation curricula are eligible. Successful applicants, normally two per year, will receive a stipend of up to $2,000 plus a one year free AAPT membership, including The Physics Teacher Journal. The scholarship may be granted to an individual for each of four years. The deadline for applying for this coming spring 2006 is DECEMBER 1, 2005. Applications for which all materials, including letters of recommendation and transcript received by this date will be considered for recommendation at the following 2006 AAPT Winter Meeting in January by the AAPT Executive Board. The application is online at: www.aapt.org/pdfs/lotze.pdf.
