  • Spring 2006 (Approx. First Half of Term).
    Fridays, 1:10-2:10 (4a); 1 Credit; S/CR/NC.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce this year’s Physics 123 line-up. “What Physicists Do” is our annual series of five lectures by invited speakers. It is intended to introduce students to a broad range of real world physics and to give some perspective on the kinds of work done by people with a physics background. The course is open to all interested graduates of Physics 112 and 115, and those considering a major in physics are particularly encouraged to enroll. A special feature of this year’s series is that it is designed to honor Bruce Thomas, who is retiring at the end of this year after 39 years at Carleton. We’ll hear from some of his former students in the first four weeks and then we’ll let Bruce tell us what he’s been up to through the years.

The presentations are in Olin 04 on Fridays during 4th period (1:10-2:10pm). The only requirement, beyond attending all talks, is to read an assigned article before hand, and then to submit a short (one page) typed essay afterwards commenting on both the talk and the reading. Speakers will be available for informal discussions at lunch before the presentations and over refreshments afterward. Questions: Joel Weisberg, Olin 319, x4367, jweisber@carleton.edu.

  • Astro 113

    Attention Astro lovers:
Astro 113, Astronomy Lab, Spring Term (3 credits, S/CR/NC): Permission of the instructor (Joel) is required. If you are interested, when you register, sign up on the Registrar’s wait list and then ask Joel for a permission form. Any physics student has the necessary background for this very fun course in which you learn to use telescopes and take digital photos through them (when it is clear!)

  • Physics and Astronomy Students: Consider applying for one of these summer research positions in our Department. Doing research can be an extremely rewarding, educational, and fruitful experience that complements your classroom learning, and you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish when researching full-time for most of the summer. The positions pay $4100 for ten weeks of work. The deadline for applications (directly to Cindy Blaha, Melissa Eblen-Zayas, or Joel Weisberg) is Wednesday, March 1.

  • February 20, Monday, Olin 04, 3:10-4:20 p.m.

Kurt will give his talk entitled Topics in Wireless Communication. All are welcome and invited.

  • David Sterling Comps Talk

    February 22, Wednesday, Olin 04, 3:10-4:20 p.m.

David will give his talk entitled Human Biodynamics and the Quest to Run a Three-Minute Mile. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

  • Spring Astrophysics Time Change

ATTENTION SPRING TERM ASTRONOMERS: Joel has changed Astrophysics I spring term to 3a (11:10 MW; 12:00 F) so as to avoid conflict with PDEs 5a. The class will be held in Goodsell 3.

By the way, the class will not meet the first week of the term, as Joel will be in Turkey on an eclipse expedition. Make ups will be scheduled later.
