• Science, Religion, and Ethics

“Hard Questions: Science, Religion, and Ethics” discussion group
Weekly series on the work of Ian Barbour
Join us this Monday at 8:30 pm for the beginning of our four-week series focused on the work of the late Carleton professor Ian Barbour!  Barbour obtained a bachelor’s and PhD in physics and began teaching at Carleton in 1955 with a joint appointment in physics and philosophy.  In 1960, he helped found Carleton’s religion department and moved to teach there full-time.  He is recognized as one of the world’s foremost scholars on the relationship between science and religion.  This Monday, we are excited to be joined by two guest speakers — Barbour’s son John as well as Carleton Chaplain Carolyn Fure-Slocum, who will both share personal stories and background on Barbour’s life.  Each week we’ll discuss one of Barbour’s four models of interaction between science and religion (conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration), starting this week with conflict.  Anyone is welcome to come any week — there is no obligation to attend all four.  Contact Amelia Broman (bromana@) with questions.  Zoom link
  • Physics Table

Join a group of students, faculty, and staff for a social hour.  ANYONE, including first-year students, is welcome to come!  You don’t need to know a lot about physics.  In fact, we discuss just about anything under the sun, and it’s all for fun!

  • APS Webinar

Students often hear that specific skills (e.g. communication, project management, cost-benefit analysis) are useful in industry. However it’s not always clear exactly what these actually look like in private sector settings.
APS has launched the webinar series, “Success in Industry Careers,” which will focus on specific skills and knowledge that physics students need to thrive in private sector environments. To sign up for the series, join our APS Webinars mailing list. The next webinar in the Success in Industry Careers series, Panel Discussion: The Many Faces of Industry Careers, will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. ET.

In this interactive panel discussion, you will hear from a diverse panel of industry physicists about the skills that will set you apart in industry settings, from their unique perspectives in the semiconductor, data science, defense, and medical physics industries.

Can’t attend live? Register now and we’ll email you a recording after the webinar. Visit the website for a look at our upcoming webinars.
  • Master’s program in Environmental Science and Policy

Columbia University’s Master of Public Administration in Environmental Science and Policy program is seeking talented prospective students, who are dedicated to taking on some of the world’s greatest challenges. I would like to share with you some of the unique aspects of the program!

The program represents a partnership between Columbia’s acclaimed Earth Institute, including the internationally renowned Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and the highly ranked School of Public and International Affairs. Nearly twenty years after its creation, it remains unique in anchoring the study of policy analysis and management in an understanding of basic applied environmental science.

By integrating science with environmental policy and management, the program provides students the practical knowledge and training to become leaders in the rapidly growing area of sustainability. The program’s visionary curriculum emphasizes applied environmental science and sustainability, general and financial management, economics and quantitative analysis, and policy and decision making so that students can thrive in the job market. Graduates hold key positions in important organizations worldwide in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.

Courses are taught by the world’s foremost sustainability academics and researchers, along with leading sustainability practitioners in New York City. Graduates transform how organizations do business by formulating and implementing innovative and comprehensive environmental long-term strategies. They know how to design and implement sustainability initiatives that are methodologically rigorous, effective, and equitable, within the constraints of available resources.

The one-year format of the program saves students time and money, allowing them to return to the workforce more quickly than two-year public policy programs. During the year, students acquire the practical skills that are required of effective leaders: fostering and managing organizational innovation, optimizing group work and dealing with group conflict, managing the work of scientists, and communicating science to non-scientists. Graduates also understand the relationship of sustainability programs to organizational management and management to finance.

The application deadlines are November 1 (early decision); January 15 (fellowship consideration); and February 15 (final). All students who apply by January 15, 2020 are eligible for partial fellowships. BIPOC students who apply by this deadline will be considered for the Dean’s Fellowship – a full tuition grant and internship –and for numerous other partial fellowships.

To learn more about this program, please contact Stephanie Hoyt, Assistant Director, sah2239@columbia.edu, (212) 851-0261, or visit our website at http://mpaenvironment.ei.columbia.edu/.

  • Pharmacology grad program at U MN

I would love to see more applications to our program from Carleton students interested in applying their foundations in chemistry/biochemistry, biology, and/or physics to graduate training and careers in biomedical research or related fields. I would be happy to discuss the features of our graduate program with interested students if they would like to learn more about our program.
Thank you for your consideration and help –
    Kevin Wickman, PhD
    Head of Pharmacology
Frederick & Alice Stark Endowed Chair
    University of Minnesota
    WHAT IS PHARMACOLOGY?
Pharmacology is an area of science residing at the intersection of biology, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, and physiology. Contemporary research in pharmacology seeks to understand the biological basis of disease, elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying drug action, and identify new molecular targets for therapeutic development. These pursuits are critical for improving our ability to treat cancer, infectious disease, neurological disorders, and cardiovascular disease, and other medical problems.
    WHO ARE WE?
The Graduate Program in Pharmacology (GPP)is a collaborative training community centered in the Univer-sity of Minnesota Medical School. Our students come to this program from all around the world and typically have undergraduate degrees in biology, chemistry/biochemistry, neuroscience, pharmacology, physics/biophysics, or physi-ology. With a commitment to excellence, the GPP prepares students for success in various careers. Our alumni are scientists in academia and industry, pharmaceutical industry leaders, educators, physicians, medical science liaisons, regulatory specialists, scientific writers, and consultants.Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) ProgramOur PhD program offers a research-intensive training experience that emphasizes critical thinking, state-of-the-art techniques, and communication. The GPP typically admits 8-12 students per year who then conduct thesis research under the supervision of a graduate faculty advisor. The GPP has more than 70graduate facultyadvisors study-ing cancer, infectious and autoimmune disease, addiction and the opioid crisis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, heart failure, pain, and many other med-ical problems. PhD students receive full tuition coverage, an annual stipend ($34,000 for the 2021-2022 academic year), and subsidized health insurance. Relocation funds are provided to PhD students who are not employed by the University of Minnesota prior to matriculation. PhD students typically graduate in 5 years or less.Master of Science (MS) ProgramOur MS program offers a comprehensive educational experience that can help make students more competitive as applicants to PhD programs, medical school, or positions in industry. The GPP typically admits 10-20 MS students per year, who then choose from multiple program tracks that vary in the intensity of the research experience. With signif-icant flexibility in coursework and laboratory requirements, our MS students can tailor this 1-2 year training program to best suit their future interests and needs.
