APS Webinar

During the “Success in Industry Careers” APS webinar series, we will focus on building and “demystifying” the key skills that will set physics graduates up for success in industry careers. To sign up for the series, join our APS Webinars mailing list. The next webinar in the Success in Industry Careers series, Teamwork in Industry, will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET.
In this talk, Matthew Thompson, chair-elect of the APS Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics, will break down the importance of teamwork, how the size of an organization alters what teamwork looks like, and how it gets judged when performance review time comes. Matt will also provide some concrete suggestions on building up your teamwork skill set before your next job search.

Astro REU!
I am writing to let you know about the NSF sponsored Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) program at the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) in Nantucket, MA.Our award winning program, the recipient of the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, is currently soliciting applications for summer 2021.The program offers paid, 10-week-long research experiences for six undergraduate students every summer. Student projects range from studies of extra-solar planets and observations of variable stars, to studies of galaxy formation/evolution and cosmology, and encompass a mix of both observational, theoretical, and computational based projects. As part of the program, the MMA provides free student housing, a student stipend, and paid travel to and from Nantucket. In addition, all students are encouraged to present their research at the annual winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in January 2022, also sponsored by the MMA.I am attaching below a poster advertising our program. I would very much appreciate it if you would distribute this poster to your department undergraduates and/or print out and hang this poster in a well-trafficked area within your department. I would also greatly appreciate your encouragement of any interested undergraduate students to apply to the program. Please note, the application deadline is February 1, 2021.I am grateful for your sharing of this information with your STEM-inclined undergraduate students and for your encouraging them to apply. Grad studies at Purdue
The Department of Physics at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) is actively recruiting qualified and motivated students for our graduate program. We offer thesis and non-thesis M.S as well as a PhD degree in physics. Our PhD program is part of the Purdue University system-wide program. The degrees are Purdue University degrees while the work is done at IUPUI. Several research areas are available, and students have the advantage of being part of a small research department. Our Department is especially strong in biophysics, condensed matter, optical physics, and physics education. Additional information can be found on our website. If you wish for more information, please call 317-274-6900 or email rdecca@iupui.edu.
