PHYS 123: What Physicists Do (week 4)

Fri, May 2, 2025 • 3:30pm - 4:30pm (1h) • Olin 141

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce this year’s Physics 123 Line-up.  “What Physicists Do” is our annual series of five lectures by invited speakers, many of whom are Carleton Physics alumni.  It is intended to introduce students to a broad range of real-world physics and to give some perspective on the kinds of work done by people with a physics background.  The talks are open to all.

The presentations are in Olin 141 on Fridays during 6th period (3:30-4:30pm).  Speakers will be available for informal discussions over refreshments afterward.  Questions: Marty Baylor, Olin 231, mbaylor@carleton.edu

May 2nd Darren Boerner:  “Data Analytics: A Love Story”

This exploration delves into the synergistic potential of a physics degree and strong logical reasoning for a successful career in data analytics, specifically within the realm of fraud investigation. It argues that the analytical rigor honed through physics, coupled with inherent logical capabilities, provides a robust foundation for dissecting complex datasets and identifying anomalous patterns indicative of fraudulent activity. This synergy is presented through the recurring metaphor of metal music: the structured yet intricate nature of physics mirrors the technical proficiency of musicianship, while logical deduction embodies the sharp, incisive riffs and complex song structures that expose underlying themes. Just as a skilled metal band meticulously crafts powerful compositions, individuals with a physics background and logical acumen can methodically analyze data, identify dissonant elements, and ultimately uncover the "breakdown" of legitimate processes caused by fraud. This abstract highlights how the problem-solving methodologies, quantitative literacy, and pattern recognition cultivated in physics, when amplified by logical thinking, equip individuals to become adept data analysts and effective investigators in the dynamic landscape of fraud detection.

Just kidding. But we are going to talk about metal. And fraud. And beauty.
