Please be aware that the class schedule on the opening day of classes in the fall is very different because of Opening Convocation in the afternoon. Check your Carleton email for opening day class schedule.
- Four (4) terms of physical education are required for graduation. It is strongly recommended that students complete this requirement by the end of their sophomore year.
- Four (4) PE credits may be earned for participation on a club sport team that meets the requirements stipulated by the department. See Club Sports for eligible club sports. Club sport athletes can only receive one PE credit for each year of participation.
- Students are only allowed to get credit for one PE class per term, unless they petition the PEAR department chair and receive approval.
- Classes conclude at the end of 9th week and must offer 18 total classes.
- Attendance requirements:
- Students are only allowed to miss 2 classes out of the 18 to receive credit.
- Taking attendance is required for credit/no credit classes.
- Grading is done by the faculty/staff member at the end of every term and submitted online on Workday.
- Grading: “S” = Satisfactory; “NC” = No Credit
- Students can be allowed to make up a maximum of 2 additional absences; this means they can miss up to 4 classes and still receive credit regardless of reason for missed class.
- Make-ups: Must be completed by the last day of classes for the term
- Tardiness: 2 tardies = 1 absence.
- Please be knowledgeable of Religious Observances that are excused absences
- Students who are physically unable to participate in or finish class because of an injury, should contact the PEAR department chair for further requirements.
- Injury – See Student Health & Safety Section below. In the event of an emergency, or if you need immediate help, please call 911 or contact Campus Security at (507)222-4444. For all injuries that occur during class, please contact Annie and complete the PEAR Accident Report Form
- If you are teaching a new class, submit your class syllabus to Annie Larson by August 1st
- Priority for scheduling of class space and time follows seniority within the department.
- We ask PEAR faculty to teach at least 2 different types of classes in their required class load.
- We want to offer no more than 3 sections of the same class in the same term.
- If enrollment is too low in a class, then the class may be canceled. That instructor will be asked to teach another class in the academic year
- Instructors may add restrictions to their class such as “sophomore priority” or “women only” in certain situations and the restrictions must be approved in advance.
- Head coaches give their varsity athletes credit (S) or no credit (NC) grades in Workday at the end of the term when their season is complete. Varsity athletes can receive one PE credit for each year.
Class rosters for faculty-taught classes can be found on Workday and on Moodle.
If you like to track class attendance, use the PE class roster and attendance form or use a google drive attendance form found in our shared drive.
