One thing that I often hear Carleton families talk about is the sense of a supportive community that their students feel here. While Carls are always striving to do their personal best, they are there to make sure their classmates feel supported too.

That feeling extends to the wide range of support services provided that are available to help students be successful and healthy. Besides all the help available at the Academic Support Center, all Carleton first-year students are assigned an academic adviser that will help guide them with navigating class selection until they choose their major during sophomore year. The Career Center also provides all first-year students with an adviser who will help as they start to explore internships, externships, and taking steps towards a future career. Student Health and Counseling (otherwise known as SHAC) and the Office of Health Promotion offer a wide range of on- and off-campus clinical services, as well as programs designed to help students manage stress and mental health, including the most popular of all, the beloved SWA dogs!

This is just a short list of everything available to help make sure your student has all the support they need to succeed. There is a more complete list; also be sure to check out the Office of Accessibility Resources (OAR), Office of Intercultural Life (OIL), Office of International Student Life (ISL), and the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC).

We know some of you have students who are thinking about pursuing future studies after their undergraduate degree. Would any of our parents or students be able to speak to how their experience at Carleton has been in that respect? What has been your student's experience with navigating a pre-professional or graduate school track at Carleton? What resources, services and opportunities are available? Does your student feel prepared for the next steps after graduation?

Carleton has been instrumental in supporting my son Frank financially through various externship/ internship experiences. He has made use of the pre-job resources provided (resume, cover letter, etc). In addition due to his direct interest in medicine he was able to make extensive use of the alumni network and career center.

As Frank is a passionate pre-medical student, the majority of his opportunities have been medically focused which have been both self-discovered and self-obtained. Carleton has supported him being a sel- advocate and seeing what additional resources it can provide.

Frank feels prepared through his experience and commitment to his passion, as he is applying to medical school in the upcoming cycle.
