How can you talk about Italian culture without mentioning the cuisine? From the pasta, to the gelato, to the pizza, to the aperitivo, food is an instrumental part of Italian life. In this blog, we will look at some of the best food places in Rome, as I have compiled a list of must try places. For ease of use, I have separated them into types of food and added a price range for budgeting purposes.
Because Italians do not eat much of a breakfast, I will skip right ahead to the main courses. Rome, just like much of Italy, is known for its amazing pizza, pasta, and sandwiches. Below are a few great places to try, ranging from fancy sit downs to quick, grab and go spots.
- Alfredo Alla Scrofa. This upscale restaurant is the birthplace of the alfredo pasta. The pasta is tossed tableside and melts in your mouth. However, reservations are required and it tends to be one of the more expensive places in Rome. $$$
- Eroi della Pizza. This tiny pizza shop makes some of the best pizza in Rome. With fresh homemade bread and a daily menu, this might be the best bang for your buck in the city. $
- All’Antico Vinaio. This famous sandwich shop is worth the wait. The line may look long as it wraps around the corner, but it moves quite quickly. The sandwiches are great portions, reasonably priced, and absolutely delicious. $
Tired of Italian food? Good thing Rome is a global hub. From the sushi and poke craze in Rome to authentic Ethiopian cuisine, you can find numerous options to switch it up.
- Sushi e Noodles. This is our favorite lunch spot in Prati. With great lunch deals, fresh sushi, and great ambiance, this is a great change of pace. $$
- Sahara. This authentic Ethiopian food is fresh and full of flavor. Using the injera and your hands, this unique dining experience is a must do. $$
Finally, I will look at the desserts of Rome. Whether it’s with lunch, after class, or after dinner, there is always a place to find a quick tiramisu, biscotti, or scoop of gelato. For a more in depth review of gelato and some ways to identify good places, here is a link to my associate Matt Wyffel’s gelato review. These are my two favorite spots to grab a quick sweet snack.
- Giolitti. This popular gelato spot lives up to the hype. Great portions, lots of options, and whipped cream on top. $
- Two Sizes. The best tiramisu in town. With a 5.0 rating on just under 4,000 reviews this place is a surefire hit. $
