In February 2016, Carleton took over operation of study abroad programs in Cameroon, Europe and India formerly offered by Antioch Education Abroad. OCS is happy to report that the Fall 2016 programs are in the field and thriving! While some things are changing as part of the transition, the program leadership has largely remained the same. Carleton was fortunate to retain the excellent leadership of the faculty directors, all of whom are now members of the faculty at Carleton.
Like Carleton’s 10-week OCS programs, the Global Engagement Programs emphasize academic rigor, student research, and a liberal arts curriculum. Unlike Carleton’s other OCS offerings, Global Engagement Programs are semester-length and are open to students from undergraduate institutions across the United States. Twenty-seven institutions are represented among the students on Fall 2016 Global Engagement Programs, including three students from Carleton. The Off-Campus Studies office looks forward to strong representation from Carleton on each of the programs while growing the number of students from peer institutions.
Fall 2016 programs currently in the field are:
- Arts and Culture in Cameroon (Nick Hockin, faculty director)
- Buddhist Studies in India (Arthur McKeown, faculty director; Robert Pryor, consulting director)
- Women’s and Gender Studies in Europe (Iveta Jusová, faculty director)
In 2017-18, two additional programs will be added to the calendar:
- Globalization and Sustainable Development in Cameroon (Nick Hockin, faculty director)
- Language and Culture in Global Russia (Diane Nemec Ignashev, faculty director)
Beginning in Spring 2018, Language and Culture in Global Russia will be under the Global Engagement Programs umbrella. Not only will Carleton’s long-standing program in Moscow be open to students from other institutions, it will also move from an every-other year offering to an annual offering. The program schedule has been adjusted to accommodate students from either semester- or term-calendar schools.
