External Scholarships

The mission of the Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) is to provide scholarships and ongoing support to students who are underrepresented among the U.S. study abroad population. FEA makes life-changing, international experiences accessible to all by supporting students of color, community college, and first-generation college students before, during, and after they participate in education abroad programs. FEA offers general scholarships of up to $10,000 and dedicated scholarships of varying amounts; for students participating in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs; preference given to students with financial need.

Boren Scholarships, up to $12,500/semester, $25,000/year for merit-based study in select countries, including foreign language study; service component as follow-up, applications available in the Office of Student Fellowships and due in February of each year; see site for more information.

The Freeman-ASIA program is designed to support U.S.-based undergraduates with demonstrated financial need who are planning to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia. The program’s goal is to increase the number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures.

Award recipients are required to share their experiences with their home campuses or communities to encourage study abroad by others and fulfill the program’s goal of increasing understanding of Asia in the United States.

Hawkinson Foundation Scholarships have been awarded each year to undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to peace and justice. Undergrad and graduate student scholarships have typically been $1,000-5,000 each.

The Hawkinson Foundation defines peace and justice broadly. Past scholarship recipients have worked on international healthcare, LGBT equality, Native American rights, domestic violence, human rights, and health disparities in low-income communities among others.

The Gilman Scholarship offers students up to $5000 to study abroad expenses. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.

NAFSA Tamara H. Bryant Memorial Scholarship is awarded through the Fund for Education Abroad to African-American undergraduate students in the United states who hope to study abroad, and who also embody Mrs. Bryant’s spirit of resilience and commitment to intercultural exchange. FEA scholarships range from $1,250-$10,000 and can be applied for programs that run for at least 28 days.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers over 150 types of scholarships to Hispanic students. Funds can be applied to costs associated with study abroad. There are different deadlines throughout the year; check the website often and carefully. Eligibility guidelines require applicants to be one of the following: A U.S. citizen; a legal permanent resident; have a passport stamped I-551; have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA).

LGBT students who are applying for a scholarship through Fund for Education Abroad may also choose to be considered for the Rainbow Scholarship award. This scholarship awards up to $5,000 to one LGBT student participating in a high-quality, rigorous semester-long study abroad program.

The Diverse International Women of Color Study Abroad Scholarship is intended to assist women of color who are exceptional in their studies and in need of financial assistance to study abroad. DIWC will award $500 scholarships to select women of color who have been accepted to an in-person study abroad program. Deadline: April 17, 2023 (Summer 2023), July 17, 2023 (Fall 2023), and November 20, 2023 (Spring 2024). 

American University, Cairo offers scholarships based on merit and need. AUC offers different scholarships to qualified candidates with strong academic achievement and who demonstrate high financial needs.

Augsburg University CGEE programs strive to create an intentionally diverse community of co-learners in which a variety of cultures and backgrounds is represented. Toward this end, they offer scholarships ($1000 to 50% of program costs) for students who belong to historically disadvantaged groups, and additional scholarships for those that share in our mission of social justice advocacy.

Boston University offers grants and scholarships to non-BU students for any full-year, fall, spring, or summer program offered by Boston University Study Abroad.

Awards are made based on both need and merit, with an emphasis on need. The dollar amounts vary and typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 (and may occasionally exceed this level depending on the student’s eligibility and the cost of the program.) In order to be awarded a grant or scholarship, you must be admitted into a Boston University Study Abroad program. You may, however, begin the grant/scholarship application process while your Study Abroad application is under review.

CET awards $400,000 in scholarship awards each year and supports the Fund for Education Abroad to ensure financial need is not a barrier to study abroad. Most CET scholarship decisions are based on financial need, and scholarship awards are intended to encourage study abroad by helping to alleviate financial burden.

CEA CAPA offers a multitude of funding opportunities for its students. These may take the form of academic merit scholarships, opportunity grants (including a work-study subsidy), and vouchers.

CIEE offers many scholarship opportunities to its students including need-based and merit scholarships. In particular, check out the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship and Trailblazer Award for selected new programs offered by CIEE.

All students who participate in College of Global Studies, Arcadia University programs are encouraged to apply to scholarships. Semester scholarship awards range between $500-2,500 with an average award of $1,500. Summer scholarship awards range between $250-1,000 with an average award of $700. You may still receive a scholarship from Arcadia even if you already receive aid from your home school. 

DIS: Study Abroad in Scandinavia offers need and merit-based awards and is committed to supporting students with limited financial resources, from diverse backgrounds,  and/or underrepresented populations in study abroad. On average, over 50% of all students receive financial support from DIS, and many more are using financial aid granted from their home institutions towards their DIS experience as well. DIS also includes Pell Grant eligibility and work-study awards from home institutions in our award considerations.

IES Abroad offers students many different funding opportunities to help offset the costs associated with studying abroad. Awards are available up to $5,000.

Institute for Study Abroad (IFSA) offers $500–$2,500 scholarships for IFSA programs. Additional funding for specific countries/programs.

International Studies Abroad offers several scholarships, need-based and non-need-based, that range from $100–$3,000.

School for International Training (SIT) offers $500–$5,000 need- and merit-based scholarships for SIT programs, also, matching Pell grants for select programs. SIT Study Abroad is committed to increasing access to international education and to ensuring you have the information you need to successfully access funding for your study abroad program with us. SIT has awarded an average of over $1.3 million in scholarships and grants to SIT Study Abroad students in the past three years. We encourage all qualified students to apply for their need-based scholarships.

Sea Education Association (SEA) offers need-based interest-free loans and $5,000 merit “Dean’s Awards” for SEA programs. SEA has a variety of funds and works with a range of organizations and institutions to facilitate access to SEA programs. Students with these affiliations may apply for, or automatically receive, funds to assist in meeting tuition costs. In particular, SEA partners with the Fund for Education Abroad as an Access Partner. Students should apply directly to the Fund for Education Abroad and indicate that they are applying for an SEA program. The deadline for summer and fall of 2023 is January 18, 2023. The 2024 application cycle opens in July of 2023.

The University of Melbourne Global Learning team are excited to announce the launch of our Global Learning Student Ambassador Scholarships. Global Learning will be awarding scholarships (worth $2,000 AUD) to three incoming study abroad students from US based institutions/providers for semester 2, 2022.

Scholarship recipients will be required to contribute and provide content for the Global Learning Instagram account and attend various GL events and activities throughout the semester. The time commitment for student ambassadors is up to 20 hours over the course of the semester.

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. The United States-Japan Bridging Foundation funds scholarships through AATJ to help students study abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year.

BUTEX Scholarship awards £500 to US undergraduates enrolled in a program at one of the member British Universities Transatlantic Exchange (BUTEX) universities.

DAAD, German Academic Exchange Service, offers a variety of scholarships, grants, and internships to students who wish to study in Germany. If you are interested in this opportunity, please visit the Office of Student Fellowships for more information.

GO Overseas Scholarship for Study in Ireland, in concert with Education Ireland, offers two $15,000 scholarships to students who wish to study in Ireland, one for undergraduate studies, the other masters.

JASSO Student Exchange Support Program offers a monthly stipend to qualified international students who have been accepted to a Japanese university.

Mondale Scholarship for Study in Japan, Japan Society of America Minnesota $1,000-$2,000 for travel to or within Japan before, during or after your program.

The American Swedish Institute in conjunction with the Lilly Lorenzen Scholarship Committee will award $1,000 to Minnesota residents who have a working knowledge of Swedish and have a credible plan to study in Sweden.

The Upper Midwest Rebild Scholarship (UMRSC) encourages American college students to study, learn, and experience Denmark. $1000-$2000 scholarships are offered for semester and academic-year programs for US citizens or permanent residents.

The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to Japanese and American undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study abroad program or international study in either the United States or Japan. The scholarship will support the cost of attendance to the institution or study abroad program of the applicant’s choice and grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.

Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarships
The Japan American Society Tanaka and Green Academic Scholarships support undergraduates on short-term academic study (one semester or one academic year) at colleges and universities in Japan. The Society will give up to $5,000 for one academic year and up to $4,000 for one academic semester for the academic year. The scholarship may be used for any combination of tuition and other academic fees, room and board, travel and transportation (including travel within Japan), and other approved expenses.

Critical Language Scholarships, fully-funded intensive summer language institutes for 13 critical-need foreign languages. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is a summer study abroad opportunity for American college and university students to learn languages essential to America’s engagement with the world.

Betty & David Jones Language Scholarships offers awards to students studying Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish at the summer Middlebury Language Schools or the Monterey Summer Intensive Language Program. 

Taiwan-US Alliance Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program, an eight-week intensive Chinese language and culture program for students and recent graduates, is located at National Cheng Kung University.

Chairish Scholarship Program “Design Your Future” Scholarship offers $2,500 to two students from underrepresented backgrounds and all majors. Deadlines are January 1 and June 30 of each year.

Hubstaff Tech Scholarship offers a twice-yearly scholarship for students interested in technical programs. Students need to submit an essay to be eligible for $2,000.

Reedsy National Creative Writing Scholarship offers a $5000 award twice annually to student writers. The application must include the first chapter (1,500 to 7,500 words) of an original novel.

Corrine Jeannine Schillings Foundation offers study abroad scholarships to undergraduate female students who are Silver or Gold award Girl Scouts and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
