Thomas Mack ’57 wrote an editorial in the January 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) titled “Sounding Board: A Different View of Smallpox and Vaccination.” The editorial was among five articles released early by the NEJM and was cited in a number of national publications and Web sites, including the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and hivandhepatitis.com. Mack, a professor at the University of Southern California and a former smallpox officer with the CDC, writes in the journal, “The key to smallpox control is surveillance and isolation and keeping cases out of the hospital.” Mack majored in chemistry and zoology at Carleton.
