Juliane Schicker, Assistant Professor of German, presented her talk “Drawing Connections between Fin-de-siècle Vienna and the German Democratic Republic: Gustav Klimt and Sighard Gille,” at the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota on March 29. In her talk, she demonstrated how the painters’ urge to self-expression revealed the shortcomings of their social environments and examined and criticized the status quos of the ruling entities while other painters were in one way or the other part of the artistic establishment of the regime. The talk was presented by the Center for Austrian Studies and the Department of German, Scandinavian and Dutch, cosponsored by the Weisman Art Museum.
