Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to Give Concert at Carleton

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, with guest conductor Joseph Silverstein and violinist Sarah Chang, will give a concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 at Carleton College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. The program will include Mozart’s Symphony No. 33 in B-flat, K. 319, Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat for Strings, Op. 20, and Dvorak’s Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53. The event is open to the public. Admission is free to all Carleton and St. Olaf College students, faculty, staff and alumni. A $10 admission fee ($7 for senior citizens and non-Carleton/St. Olaf students) will be charged for all other attendees

Silverstein, an internationally acclaimed conductor and violinist, is interim music director of the Florida Philharmonic and principal guest conductor of Seattle’s Northwest Chamber Orchestra. He also was music director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra from 1983 until 1998, and became its conductor laureate in the 1998-99 season. As a conductor and violin soloist, Silverstein has appeared with hundreds of orchestras in the United States, as well as in Japan, Israel and Europe. He was a violinist with the Houston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra and Denver Symphony before joining the Boston Symphony in 1955. Silverstein became its concertmaster in 1962 and assistant conductor in 1971, holding both positions through the 1983-84 season. Silverstein organized the Boston Symphony Chamber Players in 1964 and served as its music director until 1983. He has been a member of the faculties at Yale University, Boston University and the Tanglewood Music Center. Silverstein studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and his teachers included Josef Gingold, Mischa Mischakoff and Efrem Zimbalist. Silverstein is a member of the string faculty at Curtis and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass, and is an artist member of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York. He holds honorary degrees from Tufts University, Boston College, Rhode Island University and the New England Conservatory.

Violinist Sarah Chang is recognized as one of classical music’s most captivating and gifted artists. She has collaborated with nearly every major orchestra and her notable recital engagements have included a Carnegie Hall debut and performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Symphony Hall in Boston, London’s Barbican Centre, Berlin’s Philharmonie and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. She has reached a wide audience through her many television appearances, concert broadcasts and best-selling recordings for EMI Classics. In 1999, she received the Avery Fisher Prize, one of the most prestigious awards given to instrumentalists for the remarkable accomplishments of her career. As a chamber musician, Chang has collaborated with such artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Leif Ove Andsnes, Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell and the late Isaac Stern. Chang studied at The Juilliard School with the late Dorothy DeLay.
