Aparna Ramaswamy ’97 and Ashwini Ramaswamy ’03 are bringing “Fires of Varanasi” to Northrop after premiering the show last year at the Kennedy Center. They are part of the critically acclaimed Ragamala Dance Company, which specializes in the Pandanallur style of bharatanatyam, the South Indian dance form that was originally performed as solo acts at Hindu temples by female dancers conveying religious stories. 

The company was founded by their mother, Ranee Ramaswamy. Aparna serves as co-artistic director and dancer, and Ashwini serves as choreographic associate and dancer.
