Rafael Frumkin ’12 returns to Northfield for book signing at Content Bookstore
Frumkin majored in philosophy at Carleton.

Rafael Frumkin ’12 came back to Northfield for a book reading and signing at Content Bookstore; the event was featured in a Northfield News piece titled, “Successful Carleton grad author returns to college-town bookstore for reading, signing.”
Normally on a book tour, critically acclaimed author Rafael Frumkin receives invitations from stores to give talks and hold book-signing events. In this case, however, she was the one who reached out to the bookstore.
Having graduated from Carleton College in 2012, Frumkin said she wanted to return to see her old friends and teachers, and to support the independent bookstore in downtown Northfield, Content. On Thursday evening, she spoke to a group of people, reading excerpts from her books and answering questions.
She got into writing around 2009, when she was just 19. She said it helped keep her sane.
“It’s a compulsion to create, which I know sounds a little pretentious,” she laughed. “People feel the need to do things in order to make themselves feel sane, right? For me, it’s not just a matter of being heard so much as being understanding. Understanding the world around you.”
Frumkin’s books explore a myriad of topics. The selections read Thursday included several absurd and comedic scenarios, which are all works of fiction.
She’s published a total of three books, including a novel called “Confidence,” a novel called “The Comedown” and “Bugsy,” a collection of short stories. A fourth is in the works.
Her books have seen success — “Confidence” was an Editors’ Pick at The New York Times and was named one of the Washington Post’s 50 Notable Works of Fiction. “The Comedown” was picked up by STARZ for a television adaptation, while a still-secret deal for another TV adaptation is coming down the pipeline soon.
