Professor George Vrtis and Kirke Elsass ’09 publish article in Oxford Research Encyclopedia of American History

George Vrtis, professor of environmental studies and history, and Kirke Elsass ’09, PhD candidate in environmental history at Montana State University, recently published an article titled, “Mining and the Environment” in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of American History (December 2023). The article offers an overview of the many ways that mining and mineral use have altered the natural world and shaped people’s relationships with the environment and with one another, as well as a discussion of the historiography.
