Post Bulletin community piece features 1932 Carleton football game

The Rochester Post Bulletin published a community piece titled, “Carleton College’s 1932 game at Army was a gridiron David vs. Goliath.”

As the train pulled out of the Northfield train station on Oct. 5, 1932, Carleton College students chanted and cheered.

The football team from their small Minnesota college was heading to West Point, New York, to once again take on mighty Army.

It was the football version of David vs. Goliath, with Carleton taking on the role of David. It was familiar territory for the Carls, as the team was known then. In 1916, Carlson had knocked off the University of Chicago, a national power at that time under legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg.

Carleton had also played such worthy opponents as Northwestern, Wisconsin and Iowa — and lost all of those games.
