The Carleton College Board of Trustees has promoted 14 professors and elected three faculty members to emeritus status.

The Concert Choir of the Northfield Youth Choirs will join the Carleton College Singers and the Carleton Choir in two performances of David Fanshawe’s “African Sanctus” on Saturday, May 23, at 3 and 8 p.m., in the Carleton Concert Hall. Fanshawe, a composer, explorer and ethnomusicologist, will be in residence at Carleton, May 18-23, as the 35th annual Ward Lucas Lecturer in the Arts.

Clement F. Shearer, one of Carleton College’s most admired and respected administrators, died of a heart attack on Thursday, May 14, 1998, at his home in Northfield. He was 49. A memorial service is planned for Friday, May 15, at 4:30 p.m. in Carleton’s Skinner Memorial Chapel.

Tofu, the often vilified soybean curd, will be tossed, barbequed and dressed up as Carleton College students celebrate its versatility at the second annual Tofu Fest on Saturday, May 9.

Carleton College is pleased to announce the appointment of seven new visiting faculty members.

As chairman and chief executive officer of Time Warner Inc., Gerald M. Levin leads the world’s foremost media and entertainment company. On April 23 and 24, he will visit Carleton College to share his expertise with students as the College’s 1998 Alice Lynch Vincent Fellow. During his stay on campus, Levin will present Carleton’s weekly convocation, host small group discussions, visit classes and lead students in an analysis of Time Warner business practices.

Fifty years ago, Carleton College’s radio station began with the help of 157 student volunteers, $1,000 in student donations, $800 in loans from the College-and a couple of shovels.

Peter Prenzel-Guthrie, emeritus professor of psychology at Carleton College, has been challenging his students since 1971 by turning institutions like Northfield’s Laura Baker School into a Carleton classroom two times a week. As part of his introductory course titled “Practicum in Mental Retardation,” Prenzel-Guthrie’s students met individually with clients (residents) at the school to study behavior modification and to determine whether all minds go through the same stages of development.

Recent trials like the O.J. Simpson case and the Oklahoma City bombing trial have intensely publicized the American justice system. Eight Carleton College students recently participated in Mock Trial, an experience which allowed them to encounter the trial process first-hand. Twenty-eight college teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan competed at this year’s regional competition at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn.

Ryan Miske has been involved with Scouting for almost as long as he can remember. Beginning in the second grade, he joined the Tiger Cubs, then the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Now a senior political science major at Carleton College, Miske’s latest challenge was achieving four formidable
Scouting goals to earn the bronze Congressional Award.
