    Carleton was mentioned in the May 24 Seeker’s Dairy column in the Star Tribune. The College is an annual destination for the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church from Saint Paul. The congregation visits the campus and holds a vespers service explaining the denomination’s rich heritage.

    Shelby Boardman, Dean of the College, has announced that the Board of Trustees voted to promote the 18 members of the faculty.

    Four retiring professors were honored with emeritus status. They are Barry (“Mike”) Casper, professor emeritus of physics; Richard Crouter, the John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies; Jerry Mohrig, the Herman and Gertrude Mosier Stark Professor Emeritus of the Natural Sciences; and Norman Vig, the Winifred and Atherton Bean Professor Emeritus of Science, Technology, and Society.

    Promoted from associate professor to professor are Tricia Ferrett, professor of chemistry; Mark Hansell, professor of Chinese; Clara Hardy, professor of classical languages; and Kofi Owusu, professor of English.

    Promoted from assistant professor to associate professor are Clinton Cowan, associate professor of geology; Fernán Jaramillo, associate professor of biology; and Melinda Russell, associate professor of music.

    Promoted from instructor to lecturer are Benjamin Allen, lecturer in music; Elizabeth Ericksen, lecturer in music; Mary Budd Horozaniecki, lecturer in music; David Saunders, lecturer in music; and David Singley, lecturer in music.

    Promoted from from instructor to senior lecturer are Jackson Bryce, senior lecturer in music; and Mark Krusemeyer, senior lecturer in music.

  • Carleton’s student orchestra will perform its annual Spring Concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 30, in the Concert Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

  • Carleton’s faculty trio, The Veblen Piano Trio, will present a recital on at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, in the Concert Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

  • Arjendu Pattanayak (physics) named KITP Scholar

    Arjendu Pattanayak, assistant professor of physics, has been named a KITP Scholar by the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The honor allows Pattanayak to travel to the Institute for a total of six weeks over the next three years to discuss theoretical physics with some of the finest minds in the field.

    Beverlee DeCoux, controller, was featured in a May 21 Faribault Daily News (Minn.) article titled “Heritage Celebration just four weeks away.” DeCoux is chair of the 2003 Faribault Heritage Celebration. “When the community started, there was quite a diversity with native Americans, French Canadians and European settlers. Today, Faribault’s even more diverse with people from Asia, Latin America, Mexico, Africa as well as from many European countries,” said DeCoux.

  • Elise Jorgens ’65 named provost at College of Charleston

    Elise Bickford Jorgens ’65 has been named provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the College of Charleston (S.C.). Jorgens recently completed 25 years of service at Western Michigan University. Her appointment is effective July 15. Jorgens majored in English at Carleton.

  • Nature Center inspired by former Carleton president Laurence Gould.

    The late Laurence McKinley Gould, former Carleton College president, was mentioned in a May 20 Rochester (Minn.) Post-Bulletin article titled “It began with a spark.” Gould visited Rochester in 1965 to give a talk abut the environment and environmental education. His message inspired a group of local teachers to found the Quarry Hill Nature Center.

  • Qiguang Zhao (Chinese) chosen for Emmy Awards jury.

    The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has selected Qiguang Zhao, the Burton and Lily Levin Professor of Chinese, as a jury member for the 2003 International Emmy Awards. This is the third time Zhao has been selected as a judge or jury member for the awards. This year he will judge the category of Asian/African TV Drama Series.
