14 March 2004Steven Schier, the Dorothy H. and Edward C. Congdon Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a March 14 Seattle Times article titled “Kerry in race to become familiar” about the developing presidential campaign. “This is a good test of whether or not people are set in stone,” said Schier. “If it’s really all about Bush, you’re not going to see a lot of movement.”

Carleton’s wind turbine plans featured in Star Tribune.
13 March 2004Carleton’s plans for a wind turbine were featured in a March 13 Star Tribune article titled “Reaping the wind: Carleton planning energy turbine.” Carleton will sell the clean energy produced by the turbine, which should pay for itself within 10 years.

Habitat for Humanity volunteers featured in Mississippi newspapers.
12 March 2004Fourteen Carleton student volunteers participating in the Habitat for Humanity International Collegiate Challenge were featured in a March 12 Meriweather (Miss.) Vindicator article titled “Students plan spring break: Habitat work in Greenville” and a March 24 series of articles in the Manchester (Miss.) Star Mercury titled ” ‘House this’ for vacation?” Carleton students interviewed included Helena Costa ’05, Kathryn Grover ’05 and Robyn Hendrix ’05. In addition to helping build a Habitat house, the volunteers also ate lunch at a local middle school and spent an hour each day in classrooms with the students. The local Habitat affiliate said this was the best group of students with whom they had worked.

Jack Goldfeather (math and computer science) publishes articles.
9 March 2004Jack Goldfeather, professor of mathematics and computer science, recently published two articles. The first, titled “Tracking in Virtual Reality,” appeared in the February 2003 issue of Math Horizons published by the Mathematical Association of America. The second, co-authored with V. Interrante and titled “A Novel Cubic-Order Algorithm for Approximating Principal Direction Vectors,” appeared in the January 2004 issue of ACM Transactions on Graphics.

9 March 2004Jeff Barge ’79 was featured in a March 7 Star Tribune article titled “Book Mark: He’d like credit for Amazon.com flap.” The article highlighted Barge’s role in forcing Amazon.com to honor the confidentiality of reviewers on their Web site. Barge was a history major at Carleton.

9 March 2004Dave Musicant, assistant professor of computer science, and Andy Exley ’03 presented a poster session for the Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education at the Association for Computing Machinery’s annual conference about their design for easily integrating LEGO Mindstorms robots into an artificial intelligence course.

Gao Hong (music) awarded State Arts Board grant.
9 March 2004Gao Hong, instructor in Chinese musical instruments, has been awarded a 2004 Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. The grant is is a pilot program to support and assist artists at various stages in their careers. It encourages artistic development, nurtures artistic creativity, and recognizes the contributions individual artists make to the creative environment of the state of Minnesota.

Women’s Hockey Flourishes at Carleton
9 March 2004When a female player on the men’s hockey team decided in 1996 that it was time to start a team of her own, she created Women’s Hockey at Carleton (WHAC). Now in its seventh season, the women’s hockey team continues to grow and gain momentum on campus.

Congdan Professor of Political Science, was quoted in a March 4 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article titled “Kucinich showing may be tribute to Wellstone” about Dennis Kucinich’s strong showing in Minnesota’s Democratic caucuses. “Caucuses advantage intensely motivated participants,” Schier said.

Baird Jarman (art history) awarded course development grant.
4 March 2004Baird Jarman, instructor in art history has been awarded a $1,000 American studies course development grant for his new course, “Object lessons: Material Culture and American History,” to be taught in the fall of 2004.
