Carleton was featured in a July 4 short subject in the Chronicle of Higher Education titled “Where the Faculty Brats Go to College.” Two Vanderbilt University economists studied the college choices of the children of professors at Northeastern institutions over a 10 year period. Those students were most likely to choose selective liberal arts institutions. Carleton was ranked number two, preceeded by Oberlin College and followed by Stanford University.

Elizabeth Pollock ’92 won a silver medal at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences annual Student Academy Awards. Pollock, one of 11 recipients, was honored for her documentary film “Indiana Aria” about four young hopeful opera singers attending the country’s top opera school. Pollock majored in English at Carleton and is a student at the University of California, Berkeley.

Friends share their memories of Mike Ewers ’04.

Jimmy Chin ’96 was named one of People Magazine’s “25 Hottest Bachelors” in the June 30 issue. A colleague said, “Everything Jimmy says and does is 100 percent genuine.” Chin is a freelance photographer for publications such as National Geographic, Outside and Men’s Journal. He is also a North Face-sponsored mountain climber. Chin majored in Asian studies at Carleton.

A memorial service for Mike Ewers ’04 will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, September 18.

Jenny Wahl, professor of economics, was a guest columnist in the June 29 issue of the Star Tribune. Her column, titled “Tax cut threatens economics foundations” addressed her concerns about the proposed national tax plan.

Colin “Mike” Ewers was a devoted student of physics and astronomy, a friendly and helpful cashier at the Bookstore, and an avid Minnesota sports fan.

Colin “Mike” Ewers, a rising senior physics and astronomy major at Carleton College, died of an apparent drowning in Puerto Rico.

Terry Rivers, director of recreational sports, recently led a roundtable discussion on the development of student club sport councils at the National Intramural Recreation Sports Symposium on Club Sports. The symposium was attended by people from 80 colleges and universities across the country.

Each summer, Carleton hosts high school teachers who teach or are interested in teaching Advanced Placement or accelerated classes.
