Andrew Fisher, assistant professor of history, presented a session titled “Contesting the Limits of Brotherhood: Interethnic Relations and Confraternities in the Tierra Caliente of Western Mexico” at the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies, hosted by the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University.

Gene Bauer, English as a second language (ESL) coordinator and adjunct instructor in educational studies, and Nancy Hill, ESL support assistant and writing/professional exploration assistant, presented a session at the NAFSA: Association of International Educators Region IV Conference titled “Best Practices: A Case Study of ESL Writing Needs and Support,” about Carleton’s approach to providing writing support to a rapidly increasing international student population and a high number of American non-native speakers of English.

Robert Bullard, an expert on environmental justice, will give a lecture titled “Confronting Environmental Racism” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, in Boliou Hall, Room 104. The event is free and open to the public.

David Biale, the Emanuel Ringelblum Professor of Jewish History at the University of California, Davis, will present the 2004 Forkosh Lecture in Judaic Studies at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, in Carleton College’s Severance Great Hall. The lecture is titled “Zealotry, Violence and the Zionist Quest for a Normal Jewish State.” This event is free and open to the public.

Jacqulyn Lauer-Glebov, assistant director of institutional research, and Carol Rutz, director of the writing program, presented related papers at the Conference on College Composition and Communication. Their panel was titled “Accounting, assessment, and improvement: Getting past good news to benefit from the bad.”

The women’s rugby team battled blustering winds to take on the University of Minnesota on the rugby pitch last Thursday. The U of M team, though holding an advantage in size, found the tenacious Carleton team unwilling to back down. Women’s rugby is one of 22 club sports offered at Carleton that include Aikido, inland sailing, men’s and women’s lacrosse and the nationally ranked men’s and women’s Frisbee teams. Team membership is open to all Carls and joining a club sport is a new athletic experience for most.

Gallery patrons crowded into Boliou Hall Friday night for the opening of the Junior Art Show. The show featured pieces by junior studio art majors working in all mediums. Students, faculty and staff members perused the work while the artists were on hand to answer questions and appreciate their classmates work.

Jonathan Paradise, professor emeritus of Hebrew in the department of classical and Near Eastern studies at the University of Minnesota, will give a talk titled “Sacred Mirror: Reflections of the Bible in Modern Hebrew Poetry” at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, in Carleton College’s Gould Library Athenaeum. The lecture marks the announcement of the winner of the first Paradise Israel Experience Scholarship, named for Paradise. The event is free and open to the public.

Jenny Wahl, professor of economics, was quoted in an April 18 Star Tribune article titled “Big deficits threaten nation’s wallet.” Wahl, a member of the Star Tribune Board of Economists, commented on the composition of the federal budget. “Foreigners hold more than a third of our debt,” Wahl said, “I think it’s something people should be concerned about.”

George Jacobson ’68 was quoted in an April 16 Portland Press Herald article about a local high school graduate who used sports as a springboard to college and is helping others do the same. “Physical athleticism is wonderful, but pushing hard for intellectual athleticism is really far more important in the development of a young person,” said Jacobson, who was a biology major and star baseball player at Carleton.
